When you source coco peat for professional hydroponic production, one of the most critical questions to ask your supplier is simple: has it been washed? The difference between washed and unwashed coco peat is not cosmetic. It determines your starting EC, your sodium load, and ultimately how much risk you carry into the first weeks of crop establishment.
Where the Problem Starts: Salt in the Coconut Husk
Coconut palms are salt-tolerant plants. They thrive in coastal regions where the soil, irrigation water, and ambient air all carry elevated sodium chloride levels. That salt accumulates inside the husk during the tree’s growth, and it remains in the coir fibre when the husk is processed into coco peat.
Raw, unwashed coco peat can carry electrical conductivity (EC) readings of 3.0 to 8.0 mS/cm or higher when measured using the 1:1.5 dilution method. At those concentrations, direct planting causes osmotic stress in the root zone—the plants cannot absorb water efficiently because the external salt concentration is too close to, or higher than, the concentration inside the root cells.
The ions responsible are primarily sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl−). Both are non-essential at hydroponic concentrations and antagonise the uptake of potassium, calcium, and magnesium when present in excess.
What Washing Actually Does
Water washing flushes the soluble salts out of the coir matrix. The raw compressed coir is hydrated with large volumes of clean water, which dissolves the sodium and chloride ions and carries them away in the runoff. Multiple wash cycles progressively dilute the remaining salt load until the substrate reaches a target EC range.

Why “Treated” Is Not the Same as “Washed”
In the market, you will sometimes encounter coco peat described as “treated” or “pre-conditioned.” This terminology often refers to the addition of synthetic compounds to the coir during processing—a practice that is distinct from straightforward water washing.

What to Ask When Sourcing Coco Peat
When evaluating suppliers, these are the questions that cut through marketing language:
- What is the EC of your finished product, and which dilution method was used to measure it?
- Is the washing process water-only, or are any chemical inputs used?
- Can you provide a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) with EC and pH measurements for the batch?
- What is the sodium and chloride content in your CoA?
- Is the substrate tested per batch, or is the CoA a generic product-level document?
A supplier who cannot answer these questions precisely is not in control of their process. For professional hydroponic production, that uncertainty creates risk that lands on the grower.
The Practical Difference for Your Crop
Unwashed coco peat requires the grower to perform pre-leaching before planting—hydrating the slab or bag and running several high-volume irrigation passes to flush salts before the crop is introduced. This adds time, water usage, and labour to the pre-crop stage. It also introduces variability: if the leaching is incomplete, salt hotspots remain in the substrate and can create uneven establishment across the crop.
Water-washed coco peat eliminates this step. The grower hydrates the substrate with their standard fertigation solution, confirms EC at the drain, and can introduce the crop with confidence that the substrate is not contributing hidden salt load to the root zone.
For high-value crops—tomatoes, strawberries, cannabis, cucumbers—that predictability is not a minor convenience. It is the foundation that consistent production data is built on.
