Commercial strawberry growing has shifted from soil to substrate faster than almost any other crop. Tabletop and gutter systems filled with coco coir now dominate protected strawberry production across the UK, Netherlands, and Belgium — because lifting the crop off the ground transformed picking labour, fruit hygiene, and root-zone control at the same time.
Strawberries are unlike vine crops in almost every substrate-relevant way: the root system is shallow and fine, the crown must stay dry while the roots stay moist, the plant is highly sensitive to salt in the root zone, and the same substrate often carries the crop across more than one season. These characteristics drive every format and mix decision in this guide.

Strawberry mixes run coarser than vine-crop mixes. The shallow root system and crown-rot sensitivity push the blend toward drainage and air, accepting a smaller water buffer in exchange.

How the Substrate Behaves Through the Season
Small volumes respond fast
A strawberry bag holds a fraction of a tomato slab's volume, so everything happens faster: it wets faster, dries faster, and its EC moves faster. This is manageable — and even useful for steering — but it means irrigation frequency, not shot size, is the main lever, and neglect shows up in hours rather than days.
Salt sensitivity changes the sourcing standard
Strawberry is among the most salt-sensitive commercial crops. Substrate that arrives with elevated EC from inadequate washing — residual sodium and chloride from the husk — costs fruit quality before the feed programme has done anything wrong. The crown-dry, roots-moist balance
Through the whole season, the substrate surface should cycle dry between irrigations while moisture persists a few centimetres down where the roots are. A surface that never dries indicates the mix, the dripper placement, or the frequency needs reviewing — and it is the leading substrate-side habitat factor for crown problems, algae, and fungus gnats.

Crown deterioration in the first weeks usually traces to planting depth or persistent surface wetness — the crown sitting in contact with continuously wet coir.
What experienced growers evaluate: planting depth first (the crown should sit proud of the surface), then whether the surface actually dries between irrigations, then dripper position relative to the crown. A free-draining 50/50 mix exists precisely to make surface dry-down achievable.
Losses that continue after these are corrected — or that spread in a pattern — are a plant-health matter for your agronomist; substrate configuration reduces the risk, but it does not treat established disease.
In a small root volume, salts concentrate fast — a strawberry bag shows in days what a tomato slab shows in weeks. Rising drain EC means salts are entering faster than the drain fraction is removing them.
What experienced growers evaluate: drain percentage first, then irrigation water quality — sodium in source water accumulates in coir and strawberry reacts to it earlier than most crops. A retained sample of the substrate as delivered lets you separate what the substrate brought from what the season added.
The sourcing angle: this is the crop where supplier washing standards matter most. Coir that arrives clean gives your leaching programme room to work; coir carrying residual salt spends that room before the season starts.
Tabletop bags in moving air on a hot day can outrun a conservative irrigation schedule — small volume, big leaf area, direct exposure.
What experienced growers evaluate: irrigation frequency against the actual dry-down rate (weighing a reference bag is the simple check), and whether the mix suits the site — exposed, windy installations often justify shifting from 50/50 toward 60/40 for the extra buffer.
Fully dried coir re-wets reluctantly: water channels down the shrinkage gaps and drains without re-saturating the profile. Recovery is a series of small, frequent shots rather than one large one — another reason prevention via frequency is the better strategy.
Second-season use is established commercial practice in strawberry — more so than in any other crop we supply — but it is a per-house decision, not a default.
What growers assess: structure (bags still drain freely and have not slumped), root load (year-one roots occupy volume year-two roots will need), and above all crop health history — bags from a house with root or crown disease are not carried over, because pathogens persist in substrate and no on-farm treatment reliably clears them.

Row unevenness shows as plants of visibly different vigour along one gutter — and it compounds, because a drier bag drains less, concentrates salt faster, and stresses its plants further.
What experienced growers evaluate: dripper output first (one partially blocked emitter is the most common cause), then bag fill and hydration uniformity from planting day. Bags that hydrated unevenly at the start tend to stay uneven all season — which is why even initial wetting is checked bag by bag, not per row.
The sourcing angle: consistent fill weight and compression per bag is a manufacturing property. If new bags wet unevenly out of the box, raise it with your supplier with batch numbers in hand.
Algae needs light and permanent surface moisture. On strawberry systems the usual contributors are oversized planting holes, exposed coir between plants, and a surface that never dries.
What experienced growers evaluate: film coverage first — the less coir exposed to light, the less habitat exists — then surface dry-down between irrigations. White-on-black film with tight planting holes is the standard preventive configuration for open top formats.
Algae itself is cosmetic, but the conditions behind it also suit fungus gnats and shore flies, so persistent growth is worth treating as an early warning on surface moisture management rather than ignoring.
Reuse and End-of-Crop Considerations
Strawberry is the crop where multi-season substrate use is most established — and where the assessment discipline matters most, because the same bags may host plants for two seasons or more.
- Structure: bags must still drain freely and hold their shape. Coir that has compacted or silted holds more water than year one — and the crown-rot risk that comes with it.
- Root load: the year-one root mat occupies volume and alters water movement. Moderate root load is compatible with a second crop; a fully root-bound bag is not.
- Crop health history: the firm rule — bags from houses with root or crown disease are removed, not reused. No flushing or resting protocol reliably clears soil-borne pathogens from substrate.
- Salt reset: a season of feeding leaves accumulated salts that strawberry will not tolerate twice. Growers flush with clean water until drain EC returns to near-arrival baseline before replanting.
