Growing Berries in Coco Peat: A Commercial Guide for Strawberries, Blueberries & Raspberries

Berry crops grown in coco peat substrate consistently outperform soil-based systems in yield uniformity, disease management, and fruit quality. This guide covers substrate selection, EC and pH targets, irrigation protocols, and root zone management for three commercially important berry crops.

Berry crops demand precise root zone management. Coco peat substrate gives growers individual control over each plant’s moisture and nutrition — something that soil systems cannot reliably deliver at commercial scale. The key is matching your substrate format, irrigation programme, and EC strategy to each crop’s specific physiology.

Why Coco Peat Works for Berry Crops

Berries are unforgiving of root zone stress. Waterlogging, salt accumulation, or inconsistent moisture distribution cause yield loss that cannot be recovered mid-season. Coco peat’s physical structure — a balance of water retention and air porosity at every moisture level — gives berry crops what they need: consistent access to oxygen and water simultaneously.

Compared to soil or traditional peat-based media, coco peat offers better air-filled porosity at high moisture content, which is critical for berry root health. It is also a renewable material — a byproduct of coconut processing — and Rise Substrates produces it by water washing and sun drying alone, with no chemical additives.

Strawberries

Fragaria × ananassa — highly sensitive to root zone conditions

Strawberries are among the most popular and commercially productive crops grown in coco peat. They are also among the most sensitive to root zone stress — particularly salt accumulation and waterlogging. The substrate format matters: Open Top Grow Bags are the preferred choice, providing individual plant containment with excellent drainage and the open top structure that prevents crown rot.

Substrate Specification for Strawberries

Use a 70% coco pith / 30% chip mix for strawberries. The chip fraction improves drainage and maintains air pores even at high moisture levels. Avoid pure pith for strawberries — the high water retention of dense pith encourages Phytophthora in vulnerable crown and root tissue.

Key Grower Note — Strawberries

Strawberries need slightly higher overnight drydown than tomatoes or cucumbers — target 8–12% moisture loss overnight to encourage active root growth and prevent the anaerobic conditions that favour crown rot. Raise EC by 0.3–0.5 mS/cm during fruit colouring to concentrate sugars. Use an Open Top Grow Bag to ensure the crown stays above the substrate surface and receives adequate airflow.

Blueberries

Vaccinium corymbosum — requires acidic root zone, very specific pH window

Blueberries are the most pH-sensitive commercial berry crop and require special attention to nutrient solution preparation. They are one of the fastest-growing segments in controlled-environment berry production and respond exceptionally well to coco peat when the pH window is correctly maintained.

Substrate Specification for Blueberries

A 50% coco pith / 50% chip mix works well for blueberries. The higher chip fraction maintains excellent aeration in an acidic root zone where microbial decomposition of organic matter is slower. The result is a stable, open structure that supports the fine, fibrous root system blueberries depend on.

Key Grower Note — Blueberries

The pH window for blueberries (4.5–5.2) is the most critical management variable. At pH above 5.5, iron and manganese become unavailable and plants quickly show interveinal chlorosis. Prepare your nutrient solution with appropriate acidification to maintain this range. Monitor substrate pH weekly. A higher run-to-waste rate (30–35%) helps prevent pH drift as salts and bicarbonates accumulate in the root zone.

Raspberries

Rubus idaeus — cane crop with high oxygen demand at roots

Raspberries are increasingly grown in substrate systems as growers move away from soil-based production to extend seasons and improve consistency. Their cane structure demands a substrate with high oxygen availability at the root zone — raspberries are very susceptible to root rot under anaerobic conditions.

Use a 40% coco pith / 60% chip mix for raspberries — the highest chip fraction of the three crops covered here. This maximises air-filled porosity and drainage. Container size should be generous; raspberries develop an extensive root system and restricted containers cause early stress and cane collapse.

Key Grower Note — Raspberries

Overnight drydown is more important for raspberries than for most other crops. A 10% moisture content reduction overnight allows the substrate to refill with oxygen-rich air when the first shot of the morning is applied. Growers who reduce overnight drydown to “protect” the crop often cause the anaerobic root rot they are trying to avoid. In summer, shorten the interval between the last shot and sunset — but maintain the target drydown percentage.
